Baptism is a sacrament of the church; an outward sign and seal of the love of God and a sacred covenant between the family and the congregation. By water and the Holy Spirit we are made members of the church which is the body of Christ.
The diversity of backgrounds among the members of First Community Church means that there are many theologies of baptism present in the congregation. Therefore a pastor will discuss with the parents of the child to be baptized, or with the adult to be baptized, what the service means to the person involved and to the church. Since baptism is a sacrament of the church and a covenant with the congregation, baptisms take place within the ongoing worship life of the church.
A meeting with a pastor prior to the baptism is expected for parents or families who have not previously participated in a baptism class at First Community Church.
