Day One

Read Psalm 90: 12-17

Teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart.

Psalm 90:12

The older I get the more I think of what my legacy will be after I am gone.  The ancient Hebrews shared a similar feeling.  The quality of one's life was measured by the way one was remembered.  Was she kind and gracious?  Did he care for others the way he wished to be cared for as well? Personally, I've begun to wonder, when my days are done what feelings will emerge as people consider my life?

The Hebrew poet who wrote these words reminds us life is short. When we are young life is seemingly stretched out forever beyond our imaginations. As we age though we begin to wonder what our legacy will be, what will we leave behind, how will those who know us best consider us?

Counting my days used to feel like an almost morbid kind of practice but instead, I've discovered that it is freeing.  Now, because I am counting my days I want the days I have left to matter. I want to give myself to the world in ways that make a difference in the name of love.

If I'm being frank I have to confess I fall short of this goal more than I want to admit but even the confession is helpful. It helps me find my way back toward the center of love.  God has entrusted all of us with the days that make up our lives.  Just as God calls on us to be good stewards of our financial resources we are also invited to practice being good stewards of our time.

Prayer: God of Time, Help me live my days in the light of your love. Amen.
