Day 4

Read Psalm 26

Lord, I love the house where you live, the place where your glory dwells.

When I was a very young boy I believed God lived at the church we attended every Sunday. In my mind it made sense that God was there because everything about church was wonderful. I loved going to Sunday school, learning the stories about Jesus, singing in worship and being around so many kind people. I saw church through the eyes of a child. I vividly recall one Sunday, sitting in worship as my mom led the congregation in a song. I don’t remember the lyrics but I will never forget feeling like I was in a special place where I was loved.

Today’s reading from Psalm 26 seems a bit pretentious at first. The poet declares he has “led a blameless life.” I think we can give him a pass here. He’s not so much declaring his own righteousness as he is proclaiming the discovery that living in the the light of God’s love is the best place he can abide. In this declaration he is naming his trust in God and the beauty he finds living in God’s goodness rather than living with those whose hands are full of wicked schemes and bribes.

I no longer see the church through the innocent eyes of a child but I know deep in my heart that I want, even in light of my own failures, to live in the place where God’s love is real.

Prayer: Holy God, Give us humble eyes so we can see the purity of a life lived in love. Amen.
