Summer Sunday School
In summer Sunday school, we combine grades kindergarten through fifth and respond to Bible stories by building with LEGOs. The teachers do not tell the children what the story is supposed to mean. The children enter the story themselves and spend time with what interests them about the story. This way the child is much more likely to take away something she will remember and be able to use is her life down the road.
For instance, maybe one boy is impressed by the violence of the storm, so he builds roiling waves and lighting. Another child is impressed that Jesus sleeps through the storm, so she concentrates on building a boat that has a comfortable space for the sleeping Jesus. Still another child might be moved by the fear the apostles felt, so he builds a boat large enough to hold all the apostles.
The LEGO lessons are inspired by Building Faith Brick by Brick by Emily Slichter Given. Each week the teacher reads a Bible story and shows different styles of pictures of the story. What is special about this method, however, is the “Wondering Questions.” Much like the Godly Play model, Brick by Brick’s magic is that the lessons ask the children questions instead of telling them what they are supposed to think. This method allows the children to find their own meanings in the stories.
Times and Places
During summer (June through September) kindergarten through fifth grade at:

*At South Campus, all the children in kindergarten through eighth grade are escorted from the main sanctuary to Lincoln Road Chapel, where they come together for the offering and a prayer before going to age-grouped classrooms.
Please take a moment to register your child for Sunday school. It is important that we be able to reach you in case of an emergency during your child’s time with us. Registering also provides us with crucial allergy or other health information and ensures that you receive up-to-date information about schedule changes and special events and opportunities. Thank you for helping us to provide the best possible care for your child.
Sunday school is taught by a trained and experienced leadership team. However, volunteers are crucial to supplement classroom supervision. Two people are needed in each classroom for safety. No experience or special skills are needed, just a smiling face and helping hands. Each new volunteer is placed with an experienced leader. Thank you!
