Older Adult Ministry

Our mission is to support and enhance the connection that our elder members have with their church, with each other and with God.

Missy Obergefell, Director of Older Adult Ministry, provides for older adults of our congregation who seek personal pastoral care, monthly spiritual direction and support in considering later life living arrangements. She helps older members and their families to connect with community resources and assists with Services of Memory.

Friend to Friend Program
People in our congregation who have a passion for communing with older adults are paired with our older members who desire companionship.

ElderWisdom Book Group
ElderWisdom is a book discussion group that meets every other month to discuss books that focus on the spiritual aspects of aging. ElderWisdom meetings are in the Older Adult meeting space on the second floor of the South Campus. All ages are welcome. Books are often available in the bookstore. Follow this link to see available titles.

Coffee with Clergy
The Older Adult Council hosts “coffee talks” in the facilities where many of our older members are living. Available clergy, Older Adult Ministry leaders, council members and interested others in the congregation commune with members and friends who live in retirement communities. These gatherings include prayer, a message of inspiration and casual fellowship.

Older Adult Council
This council meets monthly to plan ways to support the mission of the Older Adult Ministry. All ages are welcome. Council member terms are three years. New terms begin each January.

Heritage Sunday
Heritage Sunday is celebrated in November when we honor our church members of 40 years or more.

Aging with Intention: Fearless Falling

Fearless FallingSunday, June 23
1 – 2 PM
Brownlee Hall

Register HERE

The “falling epidemic” sends over 60,000 adults to the ER every week, and over 400 of them die as a result of their fall. If you are 65 or over, you have a 1 in 3 chance of having an accidental fall this year. But, there are positive actions you can take to greatly reduce your chances of serious injury from falling. These involve improving yourself, your environment, and your attitude.

In the presentation, Mike Grigsby, Fearless Falling program creator, will teach actual falling techniques by demonstrating how they work on a small gym mat. He will answer questions about falling safely and how to handle different situations.

In the last seven years, Mike has taught hundreds of elders how to fall safely. He regularly teaches Fearless Falling classes at the Whetstone Community Center in Clintonville and at the Worthington Griswold Center, and is the Head Instructor of the Shuai Chiao Kungfu Club at The Ohio State University.

This program is offered as part of the Aging with Intention series, which is an on-going collaborative effort of the FCC Older Adult Ministry, the Burkhart Center, and the Jung Association to build community, to educate, and to inspire, focusing on issues that pertain to aging. Registration is encouraged, but is not essential. This program is offered free of charge. A free-will offering will be invited.
