On a Mission! June 2020
The Back Bay Mission
Shrimp Boil Cancelled
The 2020 Shrimp Boil has been cancelled due to social distancing guidelines as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We will spend the month of July honoring the Back Bay Mission in other ways. More information will be posted on the Shrimp Boil webpage as it becomes available. Click the link below to donate directly to the Back Bay Mission.
We are still planning to travel as a group to volunteer at the Mission this fall. We were unable to hold our first group meeting for the trip, but the information is available online here. The second group meeting will be held via Zoom on July 30 at 6 pm. If you are registered for the trip or considering registration, please plan to join us for this meeting. A link to the Zoom call will be posted at FCchurch.com/back-bay-mission for the meeting.
Updates from Our Mission Partners
First Community Pride+
The Stonewall Columbus Pride Parade will take place on October 3, 2020. Each year, First Community endeavors to have a large presence in the Pride Parade. We look forward to loving and supporting our community while celebrating our LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters again this year!
We are in the beginning stages of planning and we’re looking for volunteers who would like to serve on a small planning committee. Please click on the link below if you are interested in serving on the committee, volunteering, or participating in the parade. Also, please include what your interest level might be.
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Janelle Rogers at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Update from Emily Della Fera:
We have some results from the 2020 literacy classes. After four months of classes, 297 out of 311 original students took the skills test. 205 out of the 297 earned satisfactory scores. Even though the classes were cut short, at 4 months instead of 6 months, due to the pandemic, that is still a 69% passing rate, which exceeds the goal of 50% passing scores after the first session.
We are happy to have had another successful year of literacy courses.
Share & Learn Gardens
Volunteers have been busy throughout the month of May in the raised garden beds on the playground of Mary Evans CDC. Pictured below you can see volunteers prepping and planting as well the newly-redesigned herb garden. If you are interested in learning more about the Gardens or volunteering with the group, please contact Cheryl VanDeusen.
Get Involved this Summer
Please join our very own dance instructors Gabrielle Whitcomb and Harold Encarcion this summer as we joyfully learn salsa together, social distance style.
Who: Everyone can learn to dance! Please bring a family member/friend to partner as we will need to stay in family groupings.
Where: NC parking lot, west end
When: June 12, 19 and 26, 6:30-7:30 pm
What to bring: Water to drink, dancing shoes, hand sanitizer, mask, ability to have tons of fun.
Each “family” or dance couple will have their own 6 ft area marked off in order to adhere to social distance guidelines. This will be an opportunity for us to be together, safely.

Pandemic Relief Fund
The First Community Emergency fund, created in partnership with the First Community Foundation, continues to provide financial support to those impacted by the CoVid 19 pandemic. Since its inception, the Emergency Fund has provided rental assistance for five families, financed emergency auto repairs, and helped one student purchase a laptop in order to keep up with their on-line coursework.
If you know of anyone in our church family, or in the Franklin County area, who could use financial support during this pandemic, please email email@example.com. All information is confidential.
If you would like to donate to the Emergency Fund, please click the link below.
