Back Bay Mission Trip>>

General Information

The Back Bay Mission

Although the primary focus of the work camp week is housing recovery, “It’s not all nails and paint!” This mission experience provides opportunities beyond working with hammers and paint brushes for non-construction volunteers!

Housing Recovery

Housing restoration is a staple of Back Bay Mission’s ministry. This program helps low-income families stay in their homes by making necessary renovations and repairs on existing homes. Volunteers are assessed prior to the work camp on skills in carpentry, drywall, flooring, painting, roofing, plumbing and electrical work.  All levels of experience are welcome and are put to good use throughout the week.

Micah Day Center

On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays volunteers assist staff with serving the needs of homeless guests who come during the morning for showers, laundry, use of the telephone and computer, and to sign up for other services offered. Volunteers help run the laundry equipment, clean the showers between each use, and monitor the supply room.

Food Pantry

This small room in the Administration Building is where they stock food items which can be given to persons who stop in during the week for emergency assistance. One volunteer can help restock shelves, keep them in order, sort for expiration dates, and generally help with related tasks. Monday, Wednesday and Friday (9-11:30).

Loaves and Fishes

Back Bay Mission has a long history with the Loaves & Fishes Soup Kitchen. Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday to assist with meal preparation, serving, and clean up. Volunteers must wear long pants and if group includes anyone under the age of 18, must be accompanied by an adult.

Trip Leaders

The trip will be led by Rev. Kate Shaner, Minister of Mission.  The Mission Office at First Community Church facilitates communication and payment with the Back Bay Mission volunteer coordinator.

Fundraisers for Back Bay

The annual Shrimp Boil on the last Friday in July is a fundraiser for the Back Bay Mission hosted by our own Mission Council. Read more about the event>>
