Homeless Shelter

Thursdays, 5:15–8 pm (North Campus)

Every Thursday, we travel to the Community Shelter Board’s Van Buren Center (595 Van Buren Dr) in the Franklinton area near Mt. Carmel West Hospital. The Van Buren Center houses and feeds single men, women, and up to 64 families each night. The food we serve is prepared by an organization called Freedom A La Carte, a catering company that employs victims of human trafficking. Suffice it to say the Van Buren Center is doing a lot of great work, and we are lucky to have the opportunity to get involved! Learn more about the Community Shelter Board.

Times and Transportation: Please arrive at First Community’s North Campus no later than 5:15 pm on Thursday. We need to leave promptly at 5:20. We’ll return to the North Campus at 8:00 pm. If you need to drive separately, please contact Sarah (contact info below) so we can coordinate meeting up.

Eat beforehand: Have a snack before arriving; there is not an opportunity to eat at the shelter.

Who can attend? Anyone ages 14 and up. Bring friends, siblings, and parents. Of course, service hours are available.

What to wear: You are required to wear closed-toe shoes. A baseball cap is encouraged (otherwise, you’ll wear a hair net).

Liability Waiver: Volunteers of all ages must print and sign this waiver. Note that volunteers under age 18 need a parent to sign it, too! Community Shelter Board Liability Waiver »

Holidays at the Homeless Shelter

We are looking for volunteers to serve on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and New Years Eve (all of which fall on Thursdays!). Because these are important holidays, we are asking folks to make a commitment to serve so we know to expect you! Feel free to forward the link on to family and friends who might be interested!
