About this Mission
The Van Buren Center, the newest shelter in the Community Shelter Board system, opened in July 2014 in the Franklinton Area (near Mt. Carmel West Hospital). First Community Church’s High School program signed on to serve dinner every Thursday evening during the school year. The food is already provided and prepared by an organization called Freedom A La Cart, a catering company that employs victims of human trafficking. All we need to do is help in the best way we know how: by serving dinner! Read more about Community Shelter Board here>>
About the Kitchen
The kitchen operation is a collaborative effort between CSB, the YMCA, Mid-Ohio Foodbank and Freedom A La Cart. Working with Mid-Ohio Foodbank gives CSB great buying power for food. Freedom A La Cart will expand their workforce development program for survivors of human trafficking. They will staff and operate the kitchen, as well as run their social enterprise catering business from this location. Volunteers are a critical part of this collaboration to serve daily meals to people experiencing homelessness. CSB needs your help to serve everyone in need.
What is the need?
Despite the economy improving in Columbus, there are many people who are not reaping the benefits. The number of single adults in homelessness grew 14% over the last three years, and the number of families experiencing homelessness grew 65%. The family shelter system has been over capacity for the past three years, at recent times serving more than 120 families a night in a shelter designed for 50 families. An additional facility to meet the increase in family homelessness became essential. We are so excited about assisting this new facility!
How to Help
The High School program at First Community Church works to provide volunteers every Thursday during the school year. Read more about their involvement and how to volunteer with them here.
Want to help but can’t do Thursdays? Thanks to Hands On Central Ohio, you can now view the CSB calendar, create a volunteer account, and sign up to serve a meal online. Click the link to view the calendar and get started: CSB Volunteer Calendar.
Please review the attached fliers and consider organizing a small group to serve a meal at the new shelter:
Liability Waiver: Volunteers of all ages must print and sign this waiver. Note that volunteers under age 18 need a parent to sign it, too. Volunteers age 14 and older are allowed in the kitchen. You only need to fill this out once; waivers will be kept on file at the shelter: Updated CSB Liability Waiver
What will we be doing?
If it is your first time at the shelter, you will receive a short tour of the facility from the shelter’s volunteer coordinator. Then we will work in the kitchen together under the leadership of the Freedom A La Cart staff. We’ll wipe down tables, fill water pitchers, make bagged lunches, serve dinner to the shelter’s guests, then wash dishes and clean up.
